Things to do during your Plymouth City Break

Plymouth has a lot to offer, whether it is business or pleasure bringing you to this stunning waterfront location. In this feature of our website we would like to showcase a variety of activities located across the city so you can make the most of your stay.

Plymouth Life Centre

Plymouth Life Centre

Plymouth’s recent addition and home to our famous Olympic diver Tom Daley. The Plymouth Life Centre is a great way to stay active whatever the weather. Family pool, slides, Olympic size pool with diving facilities, gym, climbing zone, indoor bowl centre, multi use sports hall, sauna, steam rooms – you name it, it’s there! You can even come along and watch Tom train whilst you enjoy a cup of coffee from the in house café. So if you want to shake off some of the after meeting stress and enjoy a nice swim, tire out your little ones on a rainy day or just relax in a steam room before an evening out, this is the place for you.

Theatre Royal Plymouth

The Theatre Royal

Open over 30 years ago and situated in the heart of Plymouth City Centre. The Theatre Royal has seen performances from many stars including Ella Fitzgerald, Sir Ian McKellen, Dame Vera Lynn and Barbara Windsor. The building is also a home to the Drum Theatre and TR2. Their wide variety of productions is sure to impress you, especially considering that it is the largest and the most attended regional producing theatre. There are plenty of respectful restaurants in the area to complete your great Theatre experience and make it an evening full of fine dining with high quality entertainment.

The Royal William Yard

Another amazing Plymouth landmark, unfortunately often forgotten by city’s visitors. The Royal William yard is a prestigious area of Plymouth which is home to Europe’s largest collection of Grade I listed military buildings. Majority of the buildings within the complex have been carefully restored (some sites still being developed) and the Royal William Yard is now host to a number of high profile companies, galleries, stunning waterfront flats, great cafes and restaurants including Seco Lounge, Prezzo, Royal William Yard Bakery and more. With a frequent bus service (City Bus number 34, 34A) from Royal Parade and ample parking space, this location is easily accessible and completes the Plymouth waterfront city experience. Their famous Good Food Market is especially popular with a variety of locally sourced food and drink available to sample and purchase.

National Marine Aquarium

For just over 17 years Plymouth has been home to the National Marine Aquarium. The UK’s largest aquarium is considered to be one of the South West’s must see attractions.

The aquarium is split into four main zones: Plymouth Sound – which will surprise you with just how many amazing creatures live in Plymouth’s shallow waters; British Coast – with the breath-taking Eddystone Reef exhibition; Atlantic Ocean- deepest tank in Britain, home to the National Marine Aquarium’s majestic sharks and wide variety of other fish species; Blue Zone with the vibrant and colourful Great Barrier Reef tank.

There is plenty to see and do in the aquarium. The ever so passionate staff members provide visitors with regular talks, activities for children, interactive diving shows and even a 4D cinema!

Four times a year during school holidays you can enjoy a truly remarkable experience of sleeping with sharks. This very popular event comes highly recommended. You will have a unique opportunity to see all the fantastic night creatures and enjoy many fun activities prepared by the enthusiastic staff.

If you are looking for an exclusive venue to host a private function or a corporate event this place also offers space for up to 250 people and the views will most definitely not disappointed. National Marine Aquarium is currently offering a Day Plus Pass with every ticket purchased, which allows you to visit again for free for 12 months. Donations are highly encouraged to support the hard work this charity puts into the Aquarium as well as research and marine conservation.

Barbican Leisure Park

Barbican Leisure Park

If you are looking for some great entertainment on a rainy day, or something to do in the evening try the popular Barbican Leisure Park. This large leisure complex is situated a short walk from the main Barbican Waterfront in the Coxide area. Here you will find some of very well known dining out hot spots like Pizza Hut, Frankie and Bennys, Chiquitos, Pizza Express and Nandos, perfect for a relaxed evening with friends and family.

Whilst away from home and with some more free time on your hands you might fancy watching that great blockbuster everyone keeps on talking about. You are in the right place as Plymouth’s popular Vue cinema is situated right here, you simply cannot miss it with 15 screens and the latest Sony 4K digital cinema experience giving a sharp clear picture to enjoy.

How about some bowling, snooker, pool or arcades? Grab a drink and check out what the famous Tenpin has to offer. For an evening drink we recommend to visit one of the bars Pryzm has to offer and with 2 themed dance floors you can easily dance the night away in style.

Once you have eaten enough pizza, popcorn, relaxed in a comfy cinema seat and got your dose of flashing lights and music you might feel like you owe something to your overindulged body. Pop in to the Nuffield Health fitness and wellbeing centre for a swim or a gym session.

With a variety of dining out places, cinema, bowling, night club and fitness centre the Barbican Leisure Park simply has it all. Situated about a mile from city centre and a short walk through the footbridge on Barbican Waterfront it’s never too far away.
